Francisco Fernández-Avilés (Cuenca, 1953) is considered as the best cardiologist in our country. He is Professor of medicine and head of the Department of cardiology at the Hospital General Universitario 'Gregorio Marañón' of Madrid. Since 1972, he has worked in research in various fields such as acute coronary syndromes and cardiac regeneration therapy with stem cells. In 1999 he founded the Group's analysis of acute ischemic heart disease (Grace) to improve treatments in Infracted. He currently works in collaboration with Dr. Doris Taylor, of the University of Minnesota (USA), in the effort to create a bioartificial heart. Professor of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, head of service of Cardiology of the General University Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid. He is coordinator of the thematic network of Cardiovascular Research centres (RECAVA) of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and member of the thematic network of groups of cell therapy of the Instituto Carlos III. He is a Fellow of the European society of Cardiology and the American College of cardiology. He works on the creation of bodies bioartificial liver from stem cells.
